As recipient of the 2023 FUSE Glass Artist Residency, Marcel Hoogstad Hay has recently spent an intensive 4-week residency in JamFactory’s Glass Studio.

Awarded biennially in alternate years to the FUSE Glass Prize, the FUSE Glass Artist Residency aims to create significant opportunities for established, mid-career artists working in glass. Valued at more than $20,000 the residency provides studio access and a solo exhibition at Historic House Museum and Garden, Carrick Hill.

In its second cycle, the Residency provides the opportunity to work with skilled assistants, take risks and experiment with the development of new work using hot blown glass. Throughout his residency, Hoogstad Hay has developed mirrored, amorphous sculptures investigating the expansion and distortion of image, light and space. Drawing on his previous research, this period of uninterrupted work has provided Hoogstad Hay the freedom to experiment and extend his practice. Working with the Glass Studio team has enabled Hoogstad Hay to push his material processes and expand scale and sculptural possibilities in preparation for his first major South Australian exhibition.

With an interest in the application of astrophysics and quantum mechanics in the field of glass, Hoogstad Hay received a Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours in 2012 from the ANU School of Art and Design, Canberra, and completed the Associate Training Program at JamFactory in 2014. Hoogstad Hay has undertaken residencies at Berlin Glas, Salem State University, and ANU School of Art and Design, and in 2015 was awarded the Endeavour Executive Fellowship from the Australian Government. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, holding work in the Ernsting Foundation Glass Museum collection in Germany and was a finalist in the FUSE Glass Prize in 2020 and the Tom Malone Prize in 2021 and 2022.

Hoogstad Hay’s Exhibition is showing at Carrick Hill from 4 November 2023 - 28 January 2024
