Level 1: Introduction to Silver Jewellery Making


Designed for the absolute beginner, this introductory course teaches you basic silver jewellery making skills and techniques, such as sawing, filing, soldering, forming and roller printing to achieve various textures and finishes. Students will design and make their own jewellery pieces, beginning with a simple silver ring, with the option of making a brooch, pendants or earrings for subsequent projects.  

No prior experience required. All necessary tools and materials are supplied; students may choose to purchase additional silver if desired.

Level 2: Torch Enamelling & Experimental Casting


Designed for students who have completed the introductory course in silver jewellery, refine your jewellery-making and fabrication, and gain new skills in two specialised techniques. Students will learn how to create torch-fired enamel jewellery with a variety of colours and pattern applications, and experiment with a range of casting methods in molten metal in this 7-week course.

All required materials are supplied including copper, enamel, 25grams of sterling silver for casting and 30cm of sterling silver earring wire. You may choose to purchase extra silver for casting or findings for finished pieces if desired. Completion of our Level 1 Introduction to Silver Jewellery short course (7-week course or 4-day intensive) or equivalent basic jewellery skills essential.

Chasing Masterclass with Julie Blyfield


Immerse yourself in the technique of chasing - a process of shaping and texturing metal without cutting or engraving the surface - with renowned jeweller and metalsmith Julie Blyfield. Suitable for participants with prior jewellery-making experience, this technique-based workshop will focus on experimentation and skills development.

Emphasis will be placed on experimentation, creating samples, concept development and class discussion; a final piece may be started if time permits. The repoussé process (hammering from the reverse side) will also be discussed, however the coursework will predominantly focus on chasing. Please note that the making of chasing tools will not be covered in this workshop, due to time constraints.

This session is suitable for students with basic jewellery making skills (or previous participants of JamFactory's level 1 silver jewellery course or equivalent experience).

Silversmithing Intensive


Learn the ancient technique of silversmithing by raising a copper beaker in this four-day intensive course. Students will learn to raise a flat copper disc into a vessel by compressing and forming the metal with hammers and steel stakes. All materials are supplied including a 150mm x 1mm copper disc for forming your beaker. All skill levels are welcome from complete beginners to experienced jewellers; please note that the forming process takes time and requires repetitive hammering.

Silver Ring Workshop


In this one-day workshop, students will create and take home a sterling silver ring to their own measurements (or create a piece to a specific ring size to gift to a friend) and have the opportunity to customise their creation with their chosen texture and surfacing.

Participants will be guided through silver jewellery techniques including sawing, shaping, forming secure joins through soldering, and learn how to create different surface textures and complete other finishing techniques such as oxidizing, sanding and polishing. 

This class is suitable for complete beginners. All required materials are provided including a length of sterling silver wire to create your ring and a copper sheet to develop designs and practice different finishes.

Brass Incense Holder


 Create your own customised incense holder out of solid brass sheet in this single-day workshop. Participants will receive an introduction to basic metal fabrication and texturing techniques; learning how to cut, file and sand brass sheet to form an incense holder in a design of their choosing.

Students will be shown how to achieve a variety of forms by hand or machine tools such as a panbrake to shape metal with sharp, precise folds or smooth rounded curves, with the option to apply decorative techniques such as hammered finishes and stamps can be used to further individualise your piece. 

This class is suitable for complete beginners. All required tools and materials are provided.

Introduction to
Wheel Throwing


Designed for complete beginners, this course will introduce you to the skills and techniques required to throw clay on a potter’s wheel. Participants will be guided through various stages of the wheel-throwing process from centering and shaping clay on the wheel, trimming and glazing.

All required materials are supplied including clay, shaping tools and a variety of glazes to select from; students can expect to take home 8-9 finished pieces in a range of cylindrical forms such as cups, bowls, small planters and vessels. Suitable for beginners and participants who are familiar with wheel work but would like to further develop their skills.

Wheel Throwing


Suitable for students who have completed at least two terms of Introduction to Wheel Throwing, this course will expand your throwing repertoire with new techniques and forms such as throwing bowls and plates with a larger base, adding handles, creating matching sets and lidded vessels.

All required materials are supplied including clay, shaping tools and a variety of glazes to select from; students can expect to take home 8-9 finished pieces in a range of forms such as mugs with handles, bowls, plates and lidded vessels. This course is open to students who have completed 2 terms of beginner’s wheel-throwing classes and have confirmed with their teacher that this is the appropriate class for them.

Introduction to Hand Building
and Surface Decoration


This course will introduce you to a range of construction and surface decoration techniques in hand building ceramics. Students will learn coiling, pinching and various slab construction methods before being guided through surface treatment techniques to apply texture and decorative elements to their pieces, and then glaze all finished work.

All required materials are supplied including clay, shaping tools, plaster moulds and a variety of glazes to select from; students can expect to take home 8-9 finished pieces in a range of sculptural and practical forms such as mugs, jugs, vases and flat slab-ware pieces such as plates or trays. Suitable for beginners and participants who are familiar with hand building techniques but would like to further develop their skills.

Advanced Wheel Throwing with Peter Andersson: Servingware


In this intensive four-day masterclass designed for intermediate to advanced throwers, participants will be directed through the tools and techniques required to throw larger amounts of clay to produce a variety of objects of more substantial size, including but not limited to, larger bowls, serving platters, lidded pots and jugs.

Under the guidance of highly-experienced ceramicist Peter Andersson, students will learn how to use bats to throw pieces with a larger base, create spouts, pull handles off the pot for jugs and mugs and receive demonstrations in different techniques for trimming their work in order to refine pieces to their desired form.

All required materials are supplied including clay and shaping tools, however students are encouraged to bring their own tools if they have them. Participants can expect to complete 8-12 finished pieces, which will be bisque fired in JamFactory's ceramics studio for students to transport home to complete glazing and firing in their own kiln, or work can be glazed and fired by JamFactory at an additional cost.

Prior throwing experience essential. This course is suitable for participants who have completed at least two terms of JamFactory's Intermediate Wheel Throwing course or who have equivalent experience in wheel throwing.

Build Your Own Dinnerware


 Hand build your own 12-piece dinner set (4 plates, 4 side plates and 4 pasta bowls) in this two-session weekend course. Participants will learn the process of building ceramic pieces with slump moulds; using a rolled-out clay slab which is draped and formed over a plaster mould to create pieces of consistent size and shape which can then be individualised through surface texture.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. All materials are supplied; your finished pieces will be glazed and fired in JamFactory's Ceramics Studio, to be collected 2-3 weeks after the workshop date.

Terracotta Planters


Create your own set of plant pots crafted from natural terracotta; a porous clay ideal for regulating moisture and oxygen levels for healthy plants. Pieces will be fired in a natural unglazed finish for collection after the workshop date.

Participants will be guided through different hand-building techniques in coiling, pinching and slab construction to create a series of small to medium plant vessels of different forms and surface texture, with the option of customising pieces with drainage holes, matching drip-trays and holes or attachments for hanging planters. 

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. Students can expect to complete 1-3 individual plant pots, depending on the size and complexity of their pieces. All materials are supplied; your finished pieces will be fired in JamFactory's Ceramics Studio, to be collected 2-3 weeks after the workshop date.

Shaker-style Side Table


In this weekend-long course suitable for beginners, participants will create a small shaker-style side table in solid Tasmanian blackwood and receive an introduction to fundamental woodworking skills under the guidance of highly-experienced furniture designer Adrian Potter.

Students will be guided through the safe and effective use of hand tools for drilling holes, hand-planing and sawing - as well as power tools such as a domino machine, router, sanders and thicknesser - to construct their pieces, and learn how to smooth and prepare wood for polishing.

Wedged Tenon Step Stool


Create and take home your own solid timber step stool in this fun and intensive single-day workshop held in JamFactory's Furniture Studio. Pieces will be constructed with wedged tenons (a visible form of joinery that creates an exposed end-grain in the stool-top) for a sturdy and unique piece.

Students will be guided through the process of marking out their wooden components, how to shape and prepare their pieces with a combination of hand tools and machinery (including hand planes, drills, saws and table routers) in order to create precise and sturdy joinery with wedged tenons, as well as sand, polish and oil their finished pieces for a smooth finish.

Sashimono Bench Seat


Create and take home a small Japanese-style bench crafted purely from solid Tasmanian Oak. Suitable for complete beginners, this weekend-long course will introduce participants to traditional hand tools and techniques with a particular focus on the strength of traditional wedged mortise and tenon joinery for sturdy construction without the use of screws, nails or glue.

Students will learn how to accurately mark out joinery with a range of layout tools including bevel gauges, marking gauges, squares and marking knives. They will then be guided through cutting joinery and shaping wood by hand with chisels, Japanese saws, hand planes and spokeshaves.

All tools and materials supplied. This workshop is suitable for beginners and intermediate woodworkers who would like to refine their skills in hand-joinery.

Cheese & Charcuterie Board


Create your own wooden cutting board or serving platter in this single-session introduction-level workshop. Students will have the opportunity to carve a piece to their desired shape, and customise the colour and design through the combination of different timbers.

Students will leave the workshop with their own bespoke timber food platter, carved to the shape of their choice; and an introduction to basic woodworking techniques such as cutting and gluing wood, shaping timber using a hand plane, sanding and polishing.

Children’s Workshop: Canine Pet Portraits


Suitable for children aged 5 years of age and over, learn simple tips and tricks to capture your favourite canine's character and likeness. Led by Deb Twining of Twining Arts, participants will have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of drawing mediums such as pencils, pastels and charcoal to bring their creations to life.

Prepared reference images with optimised shadow and tonal values will be provided for students to draw from in order to demonstrate specific techniques and maximise drawing time; participants are welcome to bring their own images for discussion on how to replicate this process with their own pets.

This workshop is suitable for children aged 5 years and over (guardians and caregivers are also welcome to book in and participate). All tools and materials including paper, drawing mediums and reference images will be provided.

Children’s Workshop: Printed Tote Bags


Suitable for children aged 5 years of age and over, create your own hand-printed tote bag with Deb Twining of Twining Arts. Using a combination of prepared and DIY stencils, students will be encouraged to play with colour, composition and layered designs. 

Participants will complete the workshop with a printed tote bag in their own unique design, and learn how to create their own stencils to replicate this simple printing activity at home using textile printing inks and rollers.

This workshop is suitable for children aged 5 years and over (guardians and caregivers are also welcome to book in and participate). All tools and materials including stencils and tote bags will be provided; students are also welcome to bring their own small pieces of fabric or textile items (such as a t-shirt) to print on.

Drawing Native Botanicals


Enhance your understanding and appreciation of South Australian plant life in this guided drawing workshop led by visual artist Louise Flaherty. This creative exploration into native botanicals will involve an introduction to a range of native plants and guidance on drawing and painting individual plants using white ink on black paper; with participants producing a large-scale collaborative drawing as well as an individual drawing to take home. 

Participants will also receive two native tubestock plants to take home supplied by Barossa Bushgardens, a community nursery and resource centre based on a seven-hectare site which is home to about 130 of the 400+ species of plants that can be found in the Barossa region. 

This beginner-friendly, age-inclusive workshop is suitable for participants 10 years of age and over - participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult participant (one booking per participant). No prior experience is required and all materials will be supplied.

Wooden Spoon Making


Join Anna Lane of Sawdust Lane Woodworks to create your own functional wooden serving spoon. Starting with a spoon blank, participants will customise their pieces to a form of their choosing and add their own unique design elements; Anna will guide you through the process of marking out and shaping your spoon with a variety of rasps and files, before sanding and oiling your spoon for a smooth and food-safe surface.

There will be a range of spoon blanks in various shapes/dimensions and different timbers such as Mahogany, Tasmanian Huon Pine and Queensland Kauri to select from on the day; choose the piece that speaks to you!

All required tools and materials will be supplied and this workshop is suitable for complete beginners. (No prior experience necessary, just a bit of elbow grease!)

Cyanotype Printmaking


Join Adelaide-based paper artist and printmaker Ellen Schlobohm in this playful and hands-on introduction to cyanotype printmaking, a slow-reacting photographic print process that involves exposing paper coated with UV-sensitive materials to ultraviolet light to produce a cyan-blue print. 

Students will be invited to enjoy a slower process of making and connect to nature; Ellen will guide participants through the use of plant material in the cyanotype printing process to produce their designs, how to consider composition of positive and negative space and different methods to achieve various textures and effects in their finished print. 

Participants will have the opportunity to create several cyanotype prints such as art prints, cards and bookmarks, using natural sunlight to complete their prints (if conditions are too cloudy, UV lamps will be used instead).

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners; all required tools and materials will be supplied.

CPD: Woodworking Production Methods


Further develop your knowledge of woodworking design and production processes in this hands-on introduction to common production methods, tools and techniques in this Continuing Professional Development program.

Hosted in JamFactory's Furniture Studio, students will be guided through the process of machine-shaping with a router, simple joinery and hand-finishing techniques to create a timber picture frame.

This professional development program will comprise an informal information session, discussion, hands-on demonstrations and practical application of knowledge through a small skills-based project; a solid timber photo frame.

Students will complete the session with their own A4 photo frame and a certificate of completion for the accrual of 5 formal CPD points. This session is designed for architects seeking Continuing Professional Development, however participants of any profession are welcome to take part. No prior experience in woodworking required.

CPD: Introduction to Metal Fabrication


Gain practical skills and fundamental knowledge of the properties of various metals commonly used in furniture, industrial and interior design, with a focus on the context and history of metals and production methods within Australia.

Hosted in JamFactory's Jewellery and Metal Studio, the session will begin with a tour of the teaching studio and machine room, which provides facilities for production and commissions as well as JamFactory's associate program for creative practitioners, and public short course program.

Students will be guided through a variety of techniques such as folding, hand-hammering, applying patinas and brush-finishing individual samples to take home in a custom-made sample holder.

Students will complete the session with their own selection of up to 11 metal samples in 6 different metals and a certificate of completion for the accrual of 5 formal CPD points. This session is designed for architects seeking Continuing Professional Development, however participants of any profession are welcome to take part. No prior experience in metal-work required.
