CENTRAL CRAFT

Heading north to Mparntwe (Alice Springs), Ceramic Studio Alumna Xanthe Murphy and Jewellery and Metal Studio Alumna Katherine Grocott launched the first of JamFactory’s residencies with Central Craft in April. Supporting and promoting traditional and contemporary craft and design, Central Craft is one of the longest standing arts organisations in Central Australia. Inspired by Mparntwe and the community at Central Craft, the residency was an opportunity for Xanthe and Katherine to develop their practices; experimenting with new materials, forms and techniques, and taking inspiration from the striking landscape and local stories.

PRIMAVERA:
POIESIS AND POTTERY

Exploring the body’s faculty for poiesis, Ceramic Studio Associate Sam Gold has been selected as part of Primavera 2021: Young Australian Artists of the Year, which highlights and celebrates emerging Australian artists under the age of 35. Documenting movement and memory, and utilising clay for its mimetic qualities, Gold’s pinch-style coiled sculptures consider the storiness of our lived materiality, viewing objects as artefacts that are imbued with intimate acts of meaning. Primavera 2021: Young Australian Artists will be on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia from 1 October 2021 – 13 February 2022.

REFRAME

JamFactory Furniture Production Manager Ivana Taylor will be showcasing her first solo exhibition at Gallery Sally Dan Cuthbert in November. Known for her complex wrapped objects and soft sculptures, Ivana’s practice is driven by the process and tactility of textile techniques. Inspired by her costumier mother, the wrapped structures in Reframe are like sculptural costumes with each piece realising and illuminating (in the case of lighting) a subtle emblem of costume in 3D. Reframe will be showing from 25 November – 19 December 2021.

POST PRODUCTION

Known for his unique sculptural objects JamFactory Glass Studio Design Manager Liam Fleming has been recognised as the 2021 Guildhouse Fellow. Inaugurated in 2019 with the generous support of leading philanthropists the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, the twelve-month fellowship valued at over $50,000 provides a transformative opportunity to research and develop new work to be exhibited at the Art Gallery of South Australia. A finalist in the 2021 Ramsay Art Prize, Liam’s work tests the constraints of glassblowing, exploring the complicated relationship between craft, art, design and architecture.

LITTLE PENGUINS

Exhibiting in Crafted Technology earlier this year, ceramic artist Jane Bamford’s Little Penguin Nesting Modules are set to be installed at Emu Bay, Kangaroo Island in October. Developed through a collaborative partnership with Dr Diane Colombelli-Négrel and Sarah- Lena Reinhold, the modules will monitor the nesting habits of the Emu Bay penguin colony. This innovative work crosses science with art, with modules available to purchase as a ‘gift into habitat’ where groups and individuals were encouraged to ‘own’ this work together to form a generous group committed to championing science and design in species support.

RIPPLE EFFECT

With a unique approach to materials, the
25-year survey of contemporary jeweller Blanche Tilden’s work showcases the evolution of her practice from her time as an undergraduate to now. Developed by Geelong Art Gallery, and featuring historical and contemporary works loaned from public and private collections, Ripple Effect will open at JamFactory in Adelaide in February 2022 and speaks to Tilden’s labour-intensive practice and her endless fascination with the essence, feeling and materiality of glass.
